The Directive on services in the internal market (commonly referred to as the Bolkestein Directive) is an initiative of the European Commission (EC) aimed at creating a single market for services within the European Union (EU), similar to the single market for goods already present. I believe the proposed legislation need not have been amended. The proposal already contained a clause protecting essential services(referred to as services of general interest (SGI)) and in my opinion no other exceptions where necessary. |

In light of social responsibility we need to define and protect essential services. In a rush to make the EC "the world's most dynamic and competitive economy" we tend to overlook this subject. |

Essential services are those services necessary to prevent danger to life, health or safety. This definition sounds clear but it leaves the designation of many services open to dispute. Since I don't have a better definitions at hand, I'll have to live with it for now. |

Privatisation was supposed to be the solution to many problems in the public sector. The leading opinion was "the private sector will do better". In this article I will try to find out what the goals for privatisation where, if they where met and if they could have been achieved in a better way. Looking at our current situation I'm of the opinion that privatisation can be redefined as outsourcing incompetence whilst introducing greed. |
